The working holiday visa is an excellent option for those who wish to discover a country for several months or even a year, while working so as not to run out of money while traveling! We explain how the working holiday visa works, how to get it and why to go to Australia.
What is the Working Holiday Permit (PVT)?
The Working Holiday Visa (Working Holiday Visa) is a program for young people, which allows them to stay in a country for a certain period. What differentiates it from a traditional travel visa is that it allows its holder to work on site, which allows him to finance his stay.
In general, a WHV stay consists of:
Road trip, trips to the country and trips to surrounding countries
Work (odd jobs or skilled jobs)
Volunteering (HelpX, WWOOF ...)
Language course
Why go on a WHV in Australia?
pvt-australie If you want to get a WHV, the first thing to do is choose the country you want to go to. 58 countries have an agreement with the Working Holiday program, but not all allow it to all nationalities. The French, for example, have the choice between 14 destinations, including Australia.
One of the advantages of PVT Australia is that it is very easy to obtain. To go on a WHV in Canada, for example, you will have to be chosen by lot because Canada imposes quotas. For Australia, on the contrary, it is rather rare not to obtain the visa!
But that's not the only advantage of the Australia Working Holiday Visa: it is also the only country where you can stay for 3 years (under certain conditions). Indeed, if you work in certain sectors (notably farms and construction) for 88 days in the first year (and 6 months in the second year), you will be able to renew your visa for an additional year. Especially since the Australian salary is higher than in France. In construction or farm, the salary is around $ 24 per hour!
Moreover, Australia is a magnificent country, with a fauna and a flora unique in the world: koalas, kangaroos, platypus, wombats, crocodiles, eucalyptus… As well as magnificent landscapes: paradisiac beaches, Great Barrier Reef, desert with the famous sacred rock Uluru… The country is as big as Europe, so even in 3 years of WHV, you will not have time to get bored.
Finally, Australia is also the country with the lowest population density in the world, with a density of 2.5 inhabitants / km². The ideal setting for a road trip!
What are the conditions for going on a WHV in Australia?
The WHV is open to everyone, regardless of your level of English, your professional experience or your level of education. However, two conditions must be met in order to be able to apply for a visa:
The age limit: you must be between 18 and 35 years old inclusive when applying for your visa.
The minimum budget: to obtain your visa, you must justify funds of at least $ 5,000. You will be asked for proof, such as a bank statement.
Apply for a Working Holiday Visa in Australia
Australia offers two types of working holiday visas:
The 417 (Working Holiday Visa)
The 462 (Work and Holiday Visa)
These two visas are similar, the only difference being that the 462 visa imposes quotas and requires more documents upon registration. The choice between the two will be made according to your nationality: the French, for example, must apply for the 417 visa.
To get a Working Holiday visa for Australia, you have two options. Either contact an approved organization here in Belgium which will help you and support you in your procedures. Or go directly to the Australian Immigration Department.
A trusted organization for obtaining the VVT for a working holiday is Information Planet. They help you both before you leave and when you get there, which can always be useful in view of distant destinations.
If you prefer to do the legwork yourself. In this case, follow the next steps:
Go to homeaffairs.gov.au, the site of the Australian Immigration Department and create an account (ImmiAccount)
Answer the questions you are asked about your marital status, your state of health, and your plans in Australia
Attach the requested documents (passport and statement of account)
Pay for the visa (AU $ 485 or around € 295)
You will receive your e-visa by email within hours, days or weeks. When your visa is "granted", it has been granted to you. Once you receive your visa, you have 12 months to travel to Australia. Once you have cleared customs, you have one year to visit, travel and work in the country, but also around!
Once the visa is in your pocket, all you have to do is take out your travel insurance (some organizations offer insurance tailored to pvtists) as well as your plane ticket (between 800 and 1,200 € depending on the company and if you you do it in advance).
